It is decorated with candy canes, tinsels and other decorations by Christmas Eve (24 December). People buy gifts for their loved ones as a symbol of their love and affection for each other. The presents for family members are kept beneath the tree on Christmas Eve. Children put up red stockings on mantles because of their belief about Santa leaving gifts for them in stockings. A wreath decorates the front door, the symbol of harmony and prosperity.
Christmas is commemorated with a number of traditions and customs followed religiously. Although Christmas is primarily a Christian festival, many non-Christians also celebrate the festival with just as much enthusiasm. One of the major traditions is decorating a conifer tree, such as fir, spruce or pine. Presents are exchanged between family members and loved ones. A wreath is put up on the front door, as a symbol of prosperity and good fortune. Mistletoes are hung in the room to follow the custom of kissing adults standing beneath it. People also go door to door in groups to sing carols. People visit churches to attend the Christmas Mass in remembrance of Jesus Christ.
Why is Christmas Known as Xmas?
Christmas is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in the world. The traditions of Christmas are followed with great popularity by Christians and non-Christians alike. This festival, one of the most popular in this world, is also famously known as Xmas. Where did this name come from? The X in Xmas is derived from the Greek letter, “Chi”. Chi in English translates to “Christ”. As Christmas is short for Christ’s Mass, the “mas” in Xmas, too, stands for Mass. Since Xmas is another name for Christmas, the tree is also known as Xmas tree and Santa Claus as Father Christmas or Father Xmas.
